Located in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat, Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary (also known as Sasan Gir) is globally famous as the only natural habitat of the Asiatic Lion (Panthera leo persica).
Established in 1965, the park covers a total area of approximately 1,412 km^2, of which 258 km^2 is the fully protected core National Park area.

🦁 Key Wildlife Highlights
- Asiatic Lions: Unlike African lions, these have a distinct longitudinal fold of skin along their bellies and smaller manes. The population has grown significantly from a low of 20 in 1913 to 674 (as of the 2020 census).
- The Big Cats: Besides lions, Gir has one of the highest densities of leopards in India.
- Other Mammals: Sambar (the largest Indian deer), Chital (spotted deer), Nilgai, Four-horned Antelope (Chousingha), and Wild Boar.
- Reptiles: The Kamleshwar Dam within the park is famous for its large population of Marsh Crocodiles.
- Avifauna: Home to over 300 bird species, including the endangered White-backed and Long-billed Vultures.

Devalia Safari Park: If you cannot get a permit for the main Gir Jungle Trail, visit the Gir Interpretation Zone (Devalia). It is a fenced area that guarantees lion sightings via a shorter bus or gypsy safari.
