About Zanskar

The Zanskar Valley, a remote and enchanting region in Ladakh, has become more accessible thanks to the opening of the Darcha-Shinkula-Padum road, primarily via the Shinku La Pass. This pass, at an altitude of approximately 5,091 meters (16,703 feet), serves as the new gateway to Zanskar from the Himachal Pradesh side, significantly reducing travel time and bypassing the older, longer routes. The road itself is a testament to engineering in challenging terrain, offering a raw and adventurous driving experience through dramatic mountain landscapes, river crossings, and switchbacks. It has opened up Zanskar to a new wave of tourism, though conditions remain rugged and unpredictable.

This itinerary is designed for a thrilling yet immersive experience, balancing travel with exploration and allowing for some acclimatization. It’s crucial to understand that road conditions in the Himalayas are highly unpredictable. Always check the latest updates before and during your trip.

Highlights

  • Atal Tunnel: Your journey kicks off with the architectural marvel of the Atal Tunnel, the world’s longest highway tunnel above 10,000 feet.
  • Lahaul Valley’s Greenery: After the tunnel, you’ll be greeted by the contrasting lush green landscapes of Lahaul, with stops like Sissu (famous for its waterfall) and Keylong (the administrative center).
  • Shinku La Pass (5,091m / 16,703 ft): The New Gateway: This is the game-changer for reaching Zanskar directly from Manali. The road to Shinku La involves off-roading, steep ascents, and occasional small river crossings.
  • Dramatic Descent into Zanskar: After crossing Shinku La, you’ll descend into the raw, stark beauty of the Zanskar Valley.
  • Gonbo Rangjon: Keep an eye out for this sacred peak, a prominent and visually stunning landmark on your route into Zanskar.
  • Phugtal Monastery: One of the most iconic sights, this monastery is spectacularly built into a natural cave on a cliff face in the Lungnak Valley. Reaching it often involves a scenic trek from villages like Purne.
  • Drang Drung Glacier: Located near the Pensi La pass (if you extend your trip towards Kargil), this colossal glacier is one of the largest in Ladakh and a truly awe-inspiring natural wonder.
  • Local Culture and Lifestyle: Immerse yourself in the unique Tibetan Buddhist culture of Zanskar. Interact with the warm-hearted locals, witness traditional practices, and experience their isolated way of life.

Tour Plan

Arrive in Manali. Settle into your hotel. Use this day for relaxation and initial acclimatization. Take a leisurely stroll around Manali town, explore the Mall Road, Hadimba Devi Temple, or Old Manali. Stock up on any last-minute essentials like snacks, water, and warm clothing. Ensure your vehicle is fueled up and checked for the journey ahead. Overnight: Manali hotel.

After breakfast we will start journey. Drive through the engineering marvel of the Atal Tunnel, which cuts travel time significantly and bypasses the Rohtang Pass. The landscape transforms dramatically after exiting the tunnel, from green valleys to barren, rugged mountains. Sissu: A scenic village in Lahaul with a beautiful waterfall. A good spot for a quick photo break. Continue to Jispa, a serene village located by the Bhaga River. It's a popular and ideal spot for an overnight stay to aid further acclimatization before the high passes. Overnight: Jispa (guesthouse or campsite).

Altitude: Shinku La ~ 5,091 meters / 16,703 feet; Gombu ~ 4,000-4,200 meters est.)
Start early from Jispa, as this will be a challenging and long day with significant altitude gain. The last inhabited village and checkpost before the climb to Shinku La. You might need to register your details here. Begin the ascent to Shinku La. The road quality will deteriorate significantly, becoming a rough, unpaved track with numerous water crossings (nallas) fed by melting snow. The views are stark and incredibly beautiful, with vast mountain expanses and occasional snow patches even in summer. Gombu Rangjon: This sacred peak, also known as "God's Mountain" by locals, is a prominent and visually striking landmark. It's a popular camping spot in a pristine, remote setting, offering stunning views and clear night skies for stargazing. Basic campsites with tents and meals are usually available. Overnight: Gombu Rangjon (Tented Camp).

(Altitude: Padum ~ 3,657 meters / 11,998 feet)
After breakfast at Gombu, prepare for a day of cultural immersion and challenging travel. Phuktal Monastery is one of Zanskar's most visually stunning and remote monasteries, built into a natural cave on a cliff face. To reach it, you'll drive to a point near Purne or Anmo, and then embark on a picturesque trek. (approx. 2-3 hours one way, depending on the starting point and pace). This is a significant time commitment, and road conditions might dictate how far you can drive. If you choose to trek, start very early to allow ample time to return to the vehicle. Alternatively, you can view the monastery from a distance if time is short. Continue your drive towards Padum, the administrative and cultural heart of Zanskar Valley. The road follows the Lungnak River, offering more breathtaking views.

Today is dedicated to exploring the natural marvels surrounding Padum. Explore the ruins of the ancient Zangla Palace, perched atop a hill, offering panoramic views of the Zanskar Valley. This was once the royal residence of Zanskar. Drang Drung Glacier: This colossal glacier is one of the largest in Ladakh, accessible near the Pensi La Pass. You can witness its majestic expanse from the roadside near the pass. While a full trek to the glacier snout might take longer, you can enjoy the stunning views and capture photographs from accessible points. Enjoy the views from Pensi La, often called the "Gateway to Zanskar" from the Kargil side. Overnight: Padum (Homestay/Hotel).

Start early from Padum after breakfast. ou will retrace your journey over the Shinku La Pass. While it's the same route, the perspective changes, and you'll notice different details. Take strategic breaks for lunch and refreshment in Darcha or Jispa. Be prepared for the challenging road conditions on the Shinku La section once again. Arrive back in Manali in the evening. We should arrive in Manali by late afternoon. If you plan to leave Manali the same evening, we recommend booking your transportation after 8 PM. If you want to stay in Manali you can extend stay in Manali with us (addition charge).
