About Chanderkhani Pass Trek – “Valley of Gods”

The trek is steeped in local folklore. Legend says that Jamlu Rishi (the presiding deity of Malana) was once carrying a basket containing all the gods of the Kullu Valley. Upon reaching the top of Chanderkhani Pass, a powerful gust of wind blew the basket open, scattering the gods across the valley. This is why the region is famously known as the “Valley of Gods.”

The Landscape & Views

  • The Canopy: You begin in dense forests of Oak, Deodar, and Pine, which eventually give way to high-altitude alpine meadows (known locally as Thachs).
  • The Panorama: From the pass, you get a staggering 360-degree view of the Pir Panjal, Dhauladhar, and Bara Bhangal ranges. You can clearly spot major peaks like Deo Tibba, Indrasan, and Hanuman Tibba.

🏔️ Trek Highlights: Chanderkhani Pass

  • 360° Himalayan Panorama: Stand at 12,185 ft and witness an unobstructed view of the Pir Panjal, Dhauladhar, and Bara Bhangal ranges, including the majestic peaks of Deo Tibba and Indrasan.
  • Alpine Meadow Camping: Experience the serenity of Ghan Kuradi and Chaklani, two of the most beautiful high-altitude meadows (Thachs) in Himachal, offering world-class stargazing.
  • Diverse Terrain:Journey through a rapidly changing landscape—from the ancient wooden architecture of Rumsu Village to dense forests of Oak and Deodar, finally breaking into vast, open alpine pastures.
  • Perfect for Beginners: A high-reward trek that offers a “big mountain” feel and significant altitude gain without being overly technical, making it ideal for fit beginners and photography enthusiasts.
  • The Ridge Walk: Unlike many treks that peak at a single point, Chanderkhani offers a long, scenic walk along the ridgeline, giving you “top of the world” views for an extended period.

Treks Plan

Reach Manali / Rumsu base camp by 12pm. Freshen Up and Registration on arrival. Acclimatization walk. Orientation for the trek in the evening. Overnight stay at Manali/Rumsu base village.

Trek Distance:  3 km | Trek Duration:  3 hours | Altitude Gain:  6,745 ft to 8,930 ft

The trek kicks off from the ancient, culturally rich Rumsu Village. The initial climb takes you through a classic Himalayan canopy. You’ll be walking under a dense cover of Oak, Deodar, and Pine. The air here is crisp and heavy with the scent of pine resin. As you gain elevation, the thick forest begins to "break." The canopy opens up into wide, alpine clearings. This is where you get your first real "hero shots" of the Dhauladhar Range looming in the distance. The trail is well-defined and climbs at a gentle, steady pace. It’s designed to build your "trekking legs" for the steeper pass crossing coming later in the trip.

The Campsite: Ghan Kuradi

Reaching Ghan Kuradi is less about the physical milestone and more about the visual reward.

  • The Setting: It is a high-altitude meadow (Thach) surrounded by a ring of towering peaks.
  • Atmosphere: Because it’s an open clearing, it offers a 360-degree view of the horizon. It’s famous for its "Alpenglow"—where the setting sun paints the snow-capped peaks in vibrant oranges and pinks.
  • Nightfall: Away from village lights, the sky here is exceptionally clear, making it a prime spot for stargazing and seeing the Milky Way before you retreat to your tent.

Trek Distance: 4 km  | Trek Duration: 4 hours | Altitude Gain: 8,930 ft to 11,368 ft

Today is all about leaving the tree line behind and entering the world of high-altitude meadows.

  • The Ascent to Naya Tapru: Leaving the Ghan Kuradi campsite, the trail immediately begins to climb. You’ll weave through the last of the birch and oak forests. Naya Tapru serves as a perfect resting point—it’s a beautiful ridge that offers a breather and a chance to hydrate while looking back at the valley you’ve just climbed out of.
  • Breaking the Tree Line: Above Naya Tapru, you’ll notice the vegetation thinning out. The tall trees disappear, replaced by stunted shrubs and vast alpine grass. This transition offers unobstructed, panoramic views that weren't visible the day before.
  • The "Ridge Walk" Feel: As you approach Chaklani, the trail opens up significantly. You are now walking on the spine of the mountain, with the air feeling noticeably cooler and thinner.

Chaklani is one of the most iconic campsites in the Kullu Valley region.

  • The Vista: You are now high enough to see the Pir Panjal and Dhauladhar ranges in their full glory. To the north, you can often spot the peaks of the Indrasan and Deo Tibba.
  • The Climate: At 11,300+ ft, the wind picks up here. It’s a rugged, exposed campsite that gives you the true feeling of being "in the wild."
  • Summit Preparation: This is your "Base Camp" for the Chanderkhani Pass. Sleeping at this altitude is crucial for a successful crossing the next day.
Trek Distance:  9.5 km  | Trek Duration: 10 hours  | Altitude Gain/Loss: 11,368 ft to 10,430 ft via 12,185 ft
Today is an early start. The goal is to reach the pass before the clouds roll in, usually by mid-day.
  • The Final Ascent: The climb from Chaklani to the pass is steady and rocky. At over 12,000 ft, the air is thin, and every step requires a rhythmic breath. You are now completely above the tree line, walking through a high-altitude "stone desert" and alpine meadows.
  • The "Pass" Experience: Reaching the Chanderkhani Pass (3,715 m) is a spiritual and physical milestone. Local legend says this is where the deity Jamlu (from Malana) once opened a basket of gods, and a strong wind blew them to their current locations in the valley.
  • The 360° Panorama: From the top, the view is unmatched. You can see:
    • The Parvati Valley peaks to the east.

    • Deo Tibba and Indrasan to the north.

    • The massive Pir Panjal and Bara Bhangal ranges.

After soaking in the views and capturing memories at the pass, the long trek down begins. As you descend back toward Naya Tapru, you’ll see the return of the rhododendrons and birch trees. By descending further than your starting point (Chaklani), you ensure a much warmer and more oxygen-rich night’s sleep, which is excellent for recovery after a 10-hour day.

Today is about saying goodbye to the high-altitude silence and reconnecting with the sights and sounds of the village. Leaving Naya Tapru, you’ll quickly re-enter the dense forest zone. The trail winds through ancient Deodar, Oak, and Horse Chestnut trees. The air becomes noticeably warmer and thicker with every kilometer. As you approach Rumsu Village, you’ll pass through traditional apple orchards and see the unique wooden architecture of the local houses.
Upon reaching the road head at Rumsu, the physical trekking portion officially ends.
