The Yunam Peak Expedition is a challenging trek in the Lahaul region of Himachal Pradesh, India. The Yunam Peak Expedition is a rewarding experience for those seeking a challenging and adventurous trek in the Himalayas. However, it’s important to be well-prepared and to choose a reputable tour operator for safety and guidance. The dry and barren terrain of Lahaul mimicking that of Ladakh, makes Yunam a worthy alternative to popular mountains like Stok Kangri and Kang Yatse II. It is a less known, lesser climbed mountain, making it a perfect off-beat experience. The short duration of this trek also makes it a lot more accessible than its 6000M counterparts in the Himalayas which demand a much longer timeframe to climb. As beauties such as Deepak Tal, Suraj Tal, Baralacha La Pass form some of the visual highlights of the trek, beautiful villages like Sissu and Jispa along the way offer a window into the splendid culture of the region.
It offers the right kind of push and confidence to kick start your 6000M journey. Mind you, though, it also makes you sweat for it. But, of course, you wouldn’t expect anything less, would you!? Stay on this page for more information on the Yunam Peak trek.

Treks Plan

Day one is reserved for everyone to make their way to Manali and get settled into their accommodation. Since climbers will be coming to this altitude from sea level, the body will need time to get comfortable with the mountain air. While the body acclimatizes, we use this time to get acquainted with each other, go over some of the basic mountain rules and discuss the route, terrain, weather and all there is to know about what to expect on Yunam Peak.

The Mt. Yunam Peak Expedition is going to be an incredible experience! We’ll be starting our journey on the beautiful Manali – Leh Highway. Our travels will take us today to Jispa. The Atal Tunnel has made the journey much shorter, and now it can be completed in just 3 hours. So we’ll start comfortably after breakfast.

Today is jam-packed with excitement. From meeting two lakes with two distinct personalities – Deepak Tal and Suraj Tal, to crossing the Baralacha La Pass at 4,850M to settling into Bharatpur, our first campsite on this expedition – there is a lot happening today! We are also continuously gaining altitude and you may begin to feel the effects of that. Spend a lot of time out and about and remember to drink plenty of water to help your body adjust to this new height.
We’ll camp at Bharatpur overnight and get a good night’s sleep to prepare for our Mt. Yunam Peak Expedition the next day!

We wake up with no rush since we spent our first night at high-altitude and do not want to stress the body too much. Today is reserved for acclimatization to the altitude since we gained quite a bit of height (2,700M) in the last 2 days and have also entered a much different terrain.  We will go for an acclimatization walk in the evening where we will gain close to 300-400M in altitude, but remember to stay active and spend as much time outside your tent as possible. Spending as much time exposed to this new altitude air will help the body adapt to it much better, prepping it for what’s to come in the following days.

After a nutritious breakfast, we will set off towards Mt. Yunam Base Camp. The journey is quite long, but we will make good time by following the same path we took yesterday. By now, your bodies would have better acclimatized to the altitude, making the trek seem easier than yesterday. When we reach Mt. Yunam Base Camp, we will set up our tents and take a well-deserved break. The base camp is very windy, so it is important to protect yourself from the elements and rest your body. Make sure to drink plenty of fluids to help acclimatize naturally.
In the evening, we will have some snacks and tea, after which you are free to explore the area around the base camp. Dinner will be served in the base camp itself. Make sure to get a good night’s rest so that you are well-prepared for the challenge ahead.

We’ll spend the day getting acclimatised to the altitude and the environment before climbing Mt. Yunam Peak. After breakfast, we’ll explore the surrounding area. There is a beautiful high altitude alpine lake near the basecamp. We’ll explore the area, take pictures and enjoy the view. After lunch, we will have a practice session in which you will be briefed about equipment and its usage. We will practice negotiating snow glaciers that you will cross during the expedition. You need to practice and get used to the climbing gear including crampons, harnesses, and climbing boots. Get familiar with your equipment and learn how to properly arrest your slope falls. After the practice session, we’ll rest and enjoy the view. Dinner will be served early because we have to get an early start tomorrow. You’ll need all the rest you can get before the big day. Tomorrow, we’ll summit Mt. Yunam Peak!

- Distance: 6.5 kms
- Duration: 12 hours
- Altitude 6,100m
This is the most important day of the trek. The trek to the summit of Mt. Yunam will start at around 2 in the morning. The way to the summit is a steep climb; you will be climbing through moraines, glaciers, snow and scree clad trail to reach the summit. At this point, you might be feeling tired, but it is important to push through and continue the trek.  In snow, things get a little more precarious as the conditions of snow change continuously, it is also harder to find your footing on as compared to hard ground. The effort required to make every step forward is three times too much. Overall, snow makes the summit day on Mt. Yunam quite a hassle but that’s what adds to the sense of accomplishment once you make it to the top. Remember, you are embarking on an amazing expedition that will take you to the top of Mt. Yunam Peak! Keep going and enjoy the views from the summit! You will be able to see the magnificent view of the beautiful peaks and Chandra Bhaga (CB) & Mulkilla mountain ranges adjoining the summit. Although it is a tough trek, the view from the top is just as rewarding as the gruelling trek. Amidst the mountain ranges, the location of Mt. Yunam Peak is picturesque. So, don’t forget to take some time to enjoy the view and snap some pictures!
After spending some time at the summit and having packed lunch, you will descend to the base camp. Once you reach the base camp, have dinner and get a well-earned rest.

After a final breakfast together, we will say goodbye to Mt. Yunam and return down the mountain. Descending the slopes, we’ll marvel at all of the wonderful memories made during our expedition. Arriving in Bharatpur, we’ll board our vehicles and be driven back to Manali. You’ll reach Manali by 6 PM.
We’ll refresh and meet up to celebrate the summit and the journey. Friends from the mountains are friends forever. We’ll have a sharing session where you’ll get a chance to narrate the best memories of the expedition!
