ABOUT Hampta Pass – Chandratal Lake
Hampta Pass is one of the most amazing treks for beginners to Himalayan trekking. The pass at an elevation of 14,280 ft has been a very old trade route, connecting Lahaul’s Chandra Valley and Kullu valley of Himachal Pradesh, India. The trek also offers a contrast from the lush green valley of Kullu to the dry and arid valley of Spiti. The visit to Chandratal Lake completes another satisfying element in terms of view to the trek.
When you get onto the other side of the Hampta Pass, you’ll be in awe looking at the stark contrast from what you just left behind. The landscape that stretches in front of you is Spiti Valley, known for its barren stretches, rugged terrain and forget-me-not blue skies.
What makes the dramatic changes heightened, even more, is how thrilling the climb to Hampta Pass is. For trekkers, crossing the Hampta Pass (even without the scenery changes) is a great story of adventure. They will love the nervous excitement of climbing to the pass over many ledges, almost appearing to get to the pass, but never really sure until you get there.
🏔️ Hampta Pass Trek Highlights
- The Dramatic Crossover: Standing at the summit ($14,107\text{ ft}$), you can look back at the pine forests of Manali and forward into the “Martian” landscape of the Lahaul and Spiti valleys.
- Diverse Terrain: In just 4–5 days, you experience dense forests, alpine meadows (Jwara), glacial valleys, and rocky moraines.
- River Crossings: One of the most thrilling parts is the icy river crossing near Balu Ka Ghera, where trekkers often form a human chain to navigate the cold mountain streams.
- Stunning Campsites:
-
Chika: Surrounded by waterfalls and towering cliffs.
-
Balu Ka Ghera: A sandy riverbed nestled among snow-peaks.
-
Shea Goru: A desert-like camp under a sky full of stars.
-
🌙 Chandratal Lake Highlights
- Shape & Color: A crescent-shaped lake located at $14,100\text{ ft}$. Its crystal-clear waters change color throughout the day—from turquoise to emerald green to deep blue.
- Mythology: Local legend says this is the spot where Lord Indra’s chariot picked up Yudhishthira (the eldest Pandava) to take him to heaven.
- Stargazing: Due to zero light pollution, it is one of the best spots in India to see the Milky Way with the naked eye.
- Circumambulation: There is a 3–4 km walking trail around the lake that offers different perspectives of the surrounding peaks, like the Chandrabhaga range.
Note: Access to Chandratal is weather-dependent. If the road from Chatru is blocked by snow (common in early June or late September), you may only be able to complete the pass crossing.
