Nafran Valley, nestled in the Anantnag district of Jammu & Kashmir, is a pristine and lesser-explored gem in the Himalayan region. This untouched valley offers trekkers a unique blend of lush meadows, dense forests, and serene alpine lakes, making it a paradise for nature enthusiasts seeking tranquility away from crowded trails.
The beauty of Kashmir is simply bewitching and treks like Kashmir Great Lakes Trek and Tarsar Marsar Trek stand as great examples. While these two treks are immensely popular, there are many other trekking trails in Kashmir that are equally as beautiful and unfold in front of you the pristine and untouched beauty of Kashmir Valley. Nafran Valley is one such trek.
June to October, the trail is abounded with wild horses and cattle. Y ou will spot small mud houses all through the way – the establishments of shepherds who frequent these grasslands in the season. Winters turn this green into a blanket of white and pushes the shepherds and their cattle to lower lands.
The best time to do this trek is between July and September when the route is a carpet of colourful wildflowers and the entire valley is soaked in a bright shade of green.

Highlights of Narfan Valley Trek

  • Expansive Meadows: Nafran Valley boasts vast, undulating meadows that are often compared to the famed Lidderwat of Tarsar Marsar and Satsar of the Kashmir Great Lakes. During the summer months, these grasslands transform into a vibrant carpet of wildflowers, offering breathtaking vistas. This Trek is a moderate-difficult trek spanning over six days. This means it has long trekking days with steep ascents and descents with no easy exit points. So, it’s not meant for a beginner who hasn’t been exposed to high-altitude treks. First timer also can apply for this trek but trekker must be fit and have sufficient stamina. If Heart problem, high blood pressure, asthma, and epilepsy cannot be reconciled on this mission. The climber must not have the conditions mentioned above.
  • Diverse Landscapes: Trekkers traverse through dense forests, cross sparkling streams, and encounter serene alpine lakes, providing a diverse and enriching trekking experience.
  • Secluded Trails: As a less frequented route, the Nafran Valley Trek offers solitude and a chance to connect deeply with nature, away from the hustle of more popular treks.

Treks Plan

Altitude Gain: 5,200 ft to 7,960 ft
Drive from Srinagar to Mondlan Village; overnight stay in camps/homestay. Mondlan is a small village in the Lidder valley of Kasmir. Once we reach Pahalgam, we only need to cross the Lidder river to get to Mondlan. There is enough to see in this small village upon arrival. The night is at a homestay.

Altitude Gain: 7,960 ft to 10,374 ft
Right after breakfast, we start out for the trail head at Mondlan which is a short 8 km drive. From here, the trek starts with scattered patches of walnut trees alternating with wide open spaces. After about 2 hours of this, we enter the dense forests of Kashmir on a well-marked trail. The smells and sounds of the forest accompany us.
After the climb up on this meadow, we hit another patch of forest taking us further up in altitude. We have close to 650M of elevation to gain today which is quite a significant gain on the first day of a trek. So, remember to take it slow, there is no hurry.  The campsite for today is one of the most beautiful meadows in Kashmir and also a playground for wild horses and grazing cattle.

Altitude Gain: 10,374 ft to 11,318 ft
you will embark on a breathtaking trek from Bhaj Margi to Bhaj Pathri Top, one of the most scenic and rewarding sections of the expedition. This leg of the trek is characterized by gradual ascents, lush green meadows, and panoramic views of snow-capped peaks. Begin the trek early in the morning to take advantage of the cool weather. The initial stretch consists of gentle uphill climbs through pine forests and rhododendron-covered trails. As you ascend, you’ll be surrounded by tranquil streams, alpine flowers, and occasional glimpses of wildlife. After a few hours of trekking, the landscape opens up to vast meadows offering surreal views of surrounding mountain peaks. The meadows of Bhaj Pathri are known for their vibrant wildflowers in summer and thick snow carpets in winter. The last section of the trek includes a steep ascent, requiring endurance and careful footing.

Altitude Gain: 11,318 ft to 11,485 ft
We start out on gradual slope through the forest which leads us to a ridge walk that gives you magnificent views of meadows on both sides. On reaching Nafran Valley, the terrain turns uneven and rocky. Remember to exercise extra caution here. This is also where we get acquainted to Nafran river and a host of Gajjar (shepherd) huts. The last 300M is going to be the hardest, remember to watch your step on this challenging terrain.  We reach the campsite for today after a long day of trekking. The open land surrounded by high mountains on all sides is more than enough to put the thought of aching limbs in the background.

Altitude Gain: 11,485 ft to 12,750 ft
We are going to the alpine lake today. The route takes us up and over to the other side of Harnag Pass which is two kilometers from the Nafran Valley campsite. Easy at first and then suddenly steep, this 350M ascent is going to take long because the terrain is not particularly friendly here. Rocks and boulders make the climb upwards a challenge.  Once at the top of the pass, you get a bird’s eye view of the entire valley with the bright blue waters of the Harnag Lake bang in the middle of the scenery – stationed there like the eye of the valley looking to the skies. The descent to the lake is equally tricky over loose rocks. We camp by the lake which is being fed by smaller streams converging into it from all directions.

Altitude Loss: 11,485 ft to 10,498 ft
Today is a very long day. Continuing of a terrain like yesterday’s we are gaining over 500M to get to Harbhagwan Lake. On the way, we also pass by the Kolahoi glacier and the glorious east face of Mt. Kolahoi. This is one view you might want to etch in your memory for it is a rare spectacle.
This icy lake with big chunks of snow floating on its surface is one of sheer beauty. The blue of its waters is brighter than the skies on a sunny day. We spend some time on the shores of this lake before making our way back to our old friend, Harnag Lake.

Altitude Loss: 10,498 ft to 5,200 ft
Drive distance: 100 km ; Duration: 3-4 Hours
The last day of the trek is still as beautiful as all the landscapes we crossed throughout this trek. The refreshing 8 km walk brings us back to Aru, our road head where we get our ride back to Srinagar. Expect to reach Srinagar by evening.
